Promising David Hayes trained three-year-old Whisper Downs can score an emotional victory at Sandown this Wednesday in honour of his late owner Kevin Heffernan.
Heffernan, whose famous colours will adorn Whisper Downs, sadly passed away on Friday the 10th of February following a long battle with illness.
A former long serving committeeman of the then Victorian Amateur Turf Club now Melbourne Racing Club, Heffernan will always be remembered through the Listed Kevin Heffernan Stakes, named in his honour on Sandown Classic Day.
The 1990 Newmarket Handicap win of Gold Trump was arguably Heffernan’s greatest racing triumph however other great horses he has owned include Gold Salute, All American and Gold in Dubai.
Drawn in barrier 5, Whisper Downs will be partnered by inform apprentice Katelyn Mallyon whose 3kg claim could prove invaluable in what looks only an even field on paper.
Second up from a spell he will appreciate both the drop back to midweek grade as well as the step up in distance and should be hitting the line hard.
Though Wednesday isn’t his target this preparation, should Whisper Downs cross the line in first it would provide a fitting tribute to his late owner.
