Classy mare Secret Admirer looks well placed to win her third group one in Saturday’s $2M G1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m) at Randwick.
Despite having eased in the market after drawing the extreme outside (22), Secret Admirer’s record may suggest the draw is better than it looks on paper.
From two previous starts over the famous Randwick mile Secret Admirer boasts perfect statistics. They include a win in the G1 Flight Stakes during her first race preparation, as well as a barnstorming victory in last year’s G1 Epsom Handicap.
Crucially in both of those wins, Secret Admirer drew towards the outside (11 of 11 in the Flight and 16 of 17 in the Epsom), which allows her clear galloping room to produce her whirlwind trademark finish.
Perhaps even more significantly, given Sydney’s inclement weather forecast leading up to Saturday, Secret Admirer has proven she can handle wet ground with her only run on really heavy going a cracker when an unlucky second behind the noted mudlark Red Tracer.
There doesn’t look a great deal of pressure on paper with the three Gai Waterhouse trained runners likely to take up the first three positions in running. However this may be offset by the probable heavy conditions, where simply handling the going might be the most important factor.
As the Doncaster is the seventh race on a busy program, there is every chance the field could fan right out across the track with Brenton Avdulla likely to get Secret Admirer out into the best ground towards the outside fence.
With Secret Admirer currently rated the equal $7.80 favourite on the exchange, she looks well over the odds with significant question marks over many of her rivals in the likely conditions on Saturday.
